Renowned Cypriot violinist and composer presents his latest project Michalis Kouloumis Quintet. Through this ensemble, artist Michalis Kouloumis showcases his original compositions as well as arrangements on traditional melodies inspired by the Greek islandic repertoire performed with his unique and characteristic musical idiom. Michalis shares the stage with four exquisite musicians from Greece and Cyprus with whom he has extensively worked in recent years.

Michalis Kouloumis is the teacher and conductor of the brilliant Ammochostos Traditional Music Orchestra which captivates the audience in every performance. The Orchestra is a non-for-profit organisation and was established in 2024 with the aim of educating and showcasing the talented young musicians of Cyprus, as well as preserving the Cypriot identity through the teaching and promotion of the music of Cyprus and the wider region of the Eastern Mediterranean. Alongside the Orchestra, there is a Youth Department, taught by the exceptional musician Kyriakos Markoullis.

Violinist and composer Michalis Kouloumis returns to Fengaros Music Village proposing a workshop to showcase the music of Cyprus. The participants will have the opportunity to study the rich and diverse Cypriot repertoire through the analysis of ornaments, motifs and rhythms, as well as çeşni (flavour) and makams (Eastern modes). Kouloumis will also guide the group through composing and presenting new melodies, as well as familiarise them with performing the existing repertoire using different variations.

Acclaimed Cypriot musicians Michalis Kouloumis and Petros Kouloumis are the new artistic directors of Rialto Residency 2024. Drawing on the collaboration of 10 selected young and talented Cypriot musicians, Michalis and Petros Kouloumis will work around two main axes they have engaged with across their fertile creative route: the study and interpretation of the repertoire of the Cypriot tradition (instrumental dances, voices and songs), and contemporary Cypriot music.
